Apple announced that they will source low-energy aluminum from Elysis to lower the overall carbon emission of the manufacturing process.
There have been many issues with consumer electronics products, especially when it comes to how fast people unnecessarily upgrade their phones and tablets. What most buyers don’t realize is that these devices have a huge carbon footprint, even when they are very small.
Now, Apple has taken the first step in addressing one of the most energy-intense materials in its devices. By sourcing aluminum from Elysis, it aims to make a significant dent in the overall CO2 emissions.
Apple press release says,
"ELYSIS, the company behind the world’s first direct carbon-free aluminum smelting process, announced that it has produced the first commercial-purity primary aluminum at industrial scale for use in Apple products. The breakthrough technology produces oxygen instead of greenhouse gases, and the achievement marks a major milestone in the production of aluminum, one of the world’s most widely used metals. Apple will purchase this first batch of commercial-purity, low-carbon aluminum from ELYSIS for intended use in the iPhone SE. This aluminum was produced by ELYSIS at its Industrial Research and Development Centre in Quebec using hydropower."
Apple has always been extremely picky when it comes to the quality of aluminum, but if they have now accepted their first batch, then this should be a significantly positive move for one of the world’s largest companies.
Hopefully, this will mean a large-scale production boost for Elysis and a partnership that will extend to other manufacturers.
