Over 20 companies in the carbon-removal industry launched a coalition that will lobby the US government for policies that aim to commercialize the nascent technology.
According to Reuters, the companies want to remove carbon emissions by developing new technologies. The hope is that the new coalition will give a unified voice when discussing policies with lawmakers.
“For years, technologies such as direct air capture, which extracts carbon emissions from the ambient air, had been seen as fringe ideas. But after the passage of the federal infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act, investors have been pouring millions into the emerging field.”
The carbon-removal industry’s potential is trillions of dollars. This industry can create high-quality jobs, drive economic development, and make sure the US reaches its climate goals.
Carbon removal companies have stored less than 10,000 carbon dioxide since 2021. This number needs to reach billions of tons for the world to be on track to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. Global warming needs to be at this level for scientists to prevent severe climate conditions, so a coalition is a step in the right direction.
