Carbon Upcycling Technologies, the company that manufactures carbon dioxide-embedded cement and a concrete additive, secured $6 million for their sustainable concrete efforts. The company says their cement and concrete additives helped them reduce emissions in concrete production.
According to the Environmental Leader, the company will use the funding to build their second facility in North America. This facility will manufacture 200 tons of low emission carbon cement and concrete additives daily. The company believes this could mitigate four gigatons of carbon emissions by 2050.
“The company says its technology, which essentially leaves carbon dioxide intact in the cement material and hardens it in the product, helps alleviate that production issue. Carbon Upcycling also says its material exceeds activity strength by 40%.”
Cement has a global annual market of $750 billion, and it’s one of the most widely used materials in construction. Its production accounts for 8% of total carbon dioxide emissions.
Making cement more sustainable is important in making construction and cities lower their carbon footprints. For example, a New York community currently under construction is using sustainable materials in the pavement, and they have a net-zero focus.
