Venture capitalist John Doerr has donated $1.1 billion to Stanford University, which is the largest donation the university has ever received. The funding is specifically for creating a dedicated climate change school to lead the country in research and engineering.
The approach Doerr and Stanford are taking is that climate science is going to be the new computer science, and it’s still very much in its infancy.
Reuters had some more details about this huge donation.
“Arun Majumdar, who has advised the administrations of former U.S. President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden on energy issues, has been named as the inaugural dean of the school which will open in the fall.”
The first faculty and students are expected very soon, and plans are in place for dedicated buildings with the most advanced technology available to help with research and engineering.
It’s a big step towards funding critical research at the university level, rather than just in private research labs and startups.
