Laguna Beach announced a ban on balloons. Balloons create waste, endanger wildlife, and can lead to fires.

Laguna Beach, a seaside town in California known for stunning ocean views, is banning the sale and public use of balloons. The city is banning balloons from stopping the risk of wildfires. Balloons are also a huge source of trash floating near the shores.

According to AP News, balloons can’t be used in public to celebrate birthday and graduation parties, regardless if they are inflated with helium or not. Starting in 2024, balloons also can’t be used on public properties.
statement
“The move in the community of 23,000 people 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles comes as several California beach cities have limited balloons and the state enacted a law to regulate the types made of foil. “This is the beginning,” Chad Nelsen, chief executive of the nonprofit environmental organization Surfrider Foundation, said before the vote.”

Environmental advocates say balloons are a preventable cause of coastal pollution that’s dangerous to both animals and seabirds. Wildlife can get entangled in them or mistake balloons for food. Fire officials warn balloons to entangle with power lines, which can cause a power outage.

Luckily, Laguna Beach isn’t the only city with a ban on balloons. Several communities in Florida, New York, and Delaware have the same rules in hopes of preventing balloon pollution.
