Maryland is pushing a bill that will allow the state to generate 8.5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy and lower climate effects.

A group of environmentalists, labor unions, and consumer groups gathered to support a bill that expands Maryland’s efforts to lower climate change.

According to AP News, the bill aims to modernize the electricity grid in order to transfer offshore wind energy from ocean to land. There are hopes that the bill will enable the state to benefit from the $730 billion set aside by the Inflation Reduction Act, which incentivizes electric vehicles, renewable energy sources, and wind power across the US.

“With the federal dollars flowing, investment tax credit for the development of offshore wind, I think this piece of legislation ties in nicely,” Sen. Brian Feldman, a Montgomery County Democrat who chairs the Senate Education, Energy, and Environment Committee, told journalists recently. “The timing is excellent to take us to the next level on offshore wind.”

For the legislation to pass, Maryland Public Service Commission needs to perform an analysis of offshore wind transmission expansion options.

This law would create a goal for Maryland to generate 8.5 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2031.
