Heinz is developing the Ketchup Bottle of Tomorrow. The bottle will be completely created from sustainably sourced wood pulp.
According to EcoWatch, Heinz is partnering with Pulpex to manufacture a renewable, recyclable, and 100% paper-based bottle.
Kraft Heinz has been turning to sustainability recently. They’ve set a goal to have net-zero emissions by 2050, and they plan to turn all their product packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2025.
“Not too long ago, Heinz relied primarily on glass, a material typically considered sustainable thanks to its reusability and recyclability, for its bottles. Why not revert back to glass in the efforts to get rid of plastic? The paper bottles have a 90% lower carbon footprint than glass and 30% lower than PET, on a bottle-by-bottle basis, as reported by CBS News.”
However, the new paper bottles won’t be coming to the supermarkets any time soon. Heinz and Pulpex are currently working on a bottle prototype and figuring out how to make it work for ketchup.
Heinz ketchup will be the first-ever sauce in paper packaging. However, other companies are also going the environmentally-friendly route. For example, Alter Eco chocolates are sold in compostable wrappers, and Don Maslow Coffee uses compostable bags.
